What is the deal with Essentia alkaline water? Is it bad for you?

Essentia alkaline water is bottled 9.5 potential hydrogen (pH) alkaline water. The ingredients in Essentia alkaline water are purified water (by reverse osmosis), sodium bicarbonate, dipotassium phosphate, magnesium sulfate and calcium chloride and electrolytes for taste. They purify their water with reverse osmosis to start with the cleanest kind of water with 99% of contaminants removed. In removing contaminants precious minerals are also removed that have to be added back in after reverse osmosis.

Let’s start with some of the basics by understanding the ingredients in Essentia alkaline water:

  • Many waters with a pH < 6.5 are acidic, soft, and corrosive. Sodium compounds like sodium bicarbonate are added during water treatment in order to raise the pH level of the water by chemically neutralizing the acidity as well as to soften the water. In raising the pH you also make the water alkaline.

  • Dipotassium Phosphate is used as a preservative and a flavor enhancer. This artificial type of salt is made from the elements sodium and phosphorus.

  • Magnesium Sulfate is an inorganic salt (e.g. Epsom salt). It is a naturally occurring mineral that is important for many systems in the body especially the muscles and nerves. Magnesium sulfate also increases water in the intestines and helps with constipation. It is added to water in a very small amount as a flavor enhancer.

  • Calcium Chloride is an inorganic salt used as an electrolyte in bottled water. Calcium chloride ingested in large amounts can cause health problems, but the trace amounts found in your water bottles is safe. They regulate fluid levels in the body, keep the blood’s pH level balanced and enable muscle contractions like the beating of your heart.

The next question to ask is do bottled water with ingredients like the ones above harm your heath?

None of this should be cause for health concerns, says Marion Nestle, professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health and professor of Sociology at New York University. The additives being put into water are those naturally found in water and the quantities of these additives are likely too small to be of much significance. “If you had pure water by itself, it doesn’t have any taste,” says Bob Mahler, Soil Science and Water Quality professor at the University of Idaho. “So companies that sell bottled water will put in calcium, magnesium or maybe a little bit of salt.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that Americans reduce current levels of sodium intake by 2,300 mg per day, so you would have to drink a lot of water to make much of a difference. The typical amount of sodium in water averages at around 17 mg per liter (e.g. 33.8 ounces). A bottle of water is typically 16.9 ounces. This would equate to drinking 270 16.9 ounce bottles of water to exceed your recommended daily salt intake per FDA guidelines. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends only drinking water that contains 20 mg of sodium per liter or less.

 
 

Why does blowing oxygen into alkaline water cause it to turn acidic? Is this a valid test to claim one alkaline water is better than another?

When we blow bubbles into straw in water we are adding carbon dioxide into it which reacts with the water forming carbonic acid , so the pH the water decreases slightly.

When you blow air into Essentia alkaline water it takes about 30 seconds of blowing air into it to turn it acidic (see video below). When you blow air into Kangen 9.5 pH water for the same amount of time the color of it still stays purple, and it appears the pH has not changed. I can guarantee you though that the pH has dropped slightly perhaps from 9.5 pH to around 8.5 pH. The only way to verify the pH is to use a calibrated hydrogen meter.

It is also important to note none of the additional inorganic salts or minerals in Essentia alkaline water cause it to turn acidic when you blow air bubbles into it. It is purely as a result of carbon dioxide reacting with the water to form carbonic acid that causes the water to turn acidic. The first question I ask myself is why does it turn acidic before the Kangen Water, and has the pH of the Kangen Water been altered in anyway? Chemistry would say yes!

I decided to run my own test but this time using Kangen 8.5 pH water instead of Kangen 9.5 pH water. See the results below for yourself. Conclusion is that ALL alkaline water in bottles or from water ionizers will have a decrease in pH because of carbonic acid. You cannot claim this test of blowing bubbles into alkaline water as a basis to say one alkaline water is stronger or better for your health than another. If you blew longer into the Kangen 9.5 pH water it would eventually turn acidic but how long that would take is the question, and maybe a test you can do for yourself. At the end of the day this test is for pure marketing and not science. We should be focused on the benefits of alkaline water within the body, and not on our competitors. Be blessed and thrive.

What is John Ellis Water?

Traditional tap and purified water has a hydrogen bond angle of 104 - 104.5 degrees. John Ellis water takes standard tap or purified water and changes the hydrogen bond angle of it from 104 degrees to 113 - 114 degrees. Changing the bond angle is done using multi-pass distillation by rapidly heating and cooling the water inside the boiling chamber (3x per minute or hundreds of times per gallon made). Single pass distillation creates dead water with a bond angle of 101 degrees, and you should not drink store bought distilled water. When the pure energized distilled John Ellis water cools, the bond angle will remain at 113.8 - 114 degrees. In other words, the expansion of the hydrogen bond angle is permanent in the living water produced by the John Ellis Living Water Electron 5 Machine (LWM-5) Water Machine.

Water consumed with a bond angle above 108° degrees eliminates the effect of potential pathogens in our food supply (e.g. bacterium, viruses, or other microorganisms that can cause disease) from affecting our bodies because more oxygen from the water mixes with the superior blood flow to all the extremities of our body. The larger bond angle enables our bodies to use more of the oxygen present in the water in the cells of our bloodstream and destroy foreign pathogens, viruses, bacterium, and microorganisms. The wider hydrogen bond angle in John Ellis water has also been found to contribute to greater amounts of energy to the cells, increase blood flow, decrease swelling in the body, and it has anti-radiation (theoretically cancer-prevention) properties.

Dr. Guy Abraham, MD at UCLA Medical School did many independent studies with the Living Water Electron 5 (LWM-5) machines. He used five of them to make water and give to people. What is Alkaline Ionized Water?

Water Ionizers change the potential hydrogen (pH) of the water.  Water that is hydrogen rich has a high concentration of Molecular Hydrogen (H2).  Molecular Hydrogen acts as an efficient antioxidant that diffuses rapidly across cell membranes and can reduce free radicals, stopping oxidative stress.  Oxidation is the loss of electrons and anti-oxidation is the gain of electrons in water.  Oxidation reactions produce free radicals in the body, and antioxidants stop these reactions.  High levels of oxidants and insufficient antioxidants in the body is what causes oxidative stress.  Therefore, we should consume a diet that is high in antioxidants and care about the quality and quantity of the water we drink to reduce damage caused by oxidative stress.

Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) is measured with a millivolt meter, and it measures the ability of water to act as an antioxidant.  ORP water which measures in the lower negative ranges (-400, -600) test strong for antioxidants and is preferred for oral consumption. This kind of water removes corrosiveness and free radicals in your body that cause daily damage and premature aging.  It keeps you well hydrated, may help with weight loss, acts like an anti-inflammatory, and is great for anti-aging and wrinkles because your body is well hydrated.  In general, high ORP water is better for the outside of the body (e.g. cleaning and sanitizing).  Water with a low ORP measurement can only be achieved with a high-quality water ionizer.

  • John Ellis water is energized distilled water with a neutral potential hydrogen (pH) of 7. John Ellis water is neither alkaline or acidic. Alkaline Ionized water produces alkaline water (without the use of chemicals) which has a pH of 8.5 - 9.5, and Alkaline Ionized Water Machines use electrolysis to separate mineralized water into two water streams - alkaline and acidic water streams.   • John Ellis living water is created using multi-pass distillation and has minerals removed from the water, and Alkaline Ionized living water is alkaline hydrogen rich water created through a process called electrolysis.


Why Should I Mix John Ellis and Alkaline Ionized Water?

When you fill a glass with half John Ellis pure energized distilled water (7 pH) and half Alkaline Ionized water (9.5 pH) a few incredible things happen. You are creating a mixture that has all the benefits of John Ellis water and all the benefits of Alkaline Ionized water in a single glass. The 9.5 pH alkaline ionized water raises the pH of the John Ellis 7.0 pH water. This new glass of water will be a light alkaline living water with a pH of 8.0 - 8.5. BEFORE READING LET ME TELL YOU I WAS NOT EXPECTING ANY OF THE RESULTS BELOW!

I had a pinched sciatic nerve in my back for the last 7 - 8 months, and the first week (12/1/21 - 12/7/21) I started drinking Alkaline Ionized water mixed with John Ellis water, and the pain started to go away.  I did not know it could be the Alkaline Ionized water until I learned that infused molecular hydrogen is created through a process called electrolysis, and it reduces inflammation in the body.  I went to my chiropractor once a week instead of twice a week IMMEDIATELY because the pain had decreased that much within a couple days of drinking the water.

In the second week (12/9/21 - 12/13/21) of owning the Alkaline Ionized water machine my wife caught a cold from the group fitness class at the gym.  I thought to myself well now my daughter will get sick too and then pass it to me.  This has happened consistently EVERY year during flu season.  I read more about Alkaline Ionized water and learned that viruses like the flu have a hard time existing in an antioxidant rich alkaline environment in your body.  I started drinking 30 ounces of Alkaline Ionized water mixed with 30 ounces of John Ellis pure energized distilled water per day, and five days later my daughter and I have not caught the cold or sore throat my wife brought home from the gym.  This has NEVER happened, and I am still stunned in amazement.  I only wish I had learned about Alkaline Ionized water five years ago so I would have had the opportunity to share it with more people.

I have been experimenting with different ways of running reverse osmosis (RO) water that has a calcium sulfite remineralization filter on the RO water line out of the tankless Nobana Reverse Osmosis System into a Kangen SD501 Platinum Water Machine. The goal at the end of the day to understand what minerals are necessary for effective electrolysis, and how to get the most molecular hydrogen possible out of a water ionizer. Some questions to ask when experimenting are the following:

  1. Do you know what is in your city water? Do you need all the minerals in the tap water for effective electrolysis. Do you know how to remove unnecessary minerals from your tap water? Is there anything toxic in your city water? Do you know what minerals are corrosive and what minerals aren’t?

  2. If you remove any of tap water minerals, will you affect the ability to produce molecular hydrogen and alkalinity as the water ionizer was intended?

  3. Do you have to re-mineralize reverse osmosis water in order to produce high levels of molecular hydrogen? If you don’t re-mineralize RO water does that affect potential hydrogen (pH) levels? If yes, is the water still safe to consume?

  4. Can you get more molecular hydrogen by running the machine slower or faster? How do you measure for molecular hydrogen.

It is a fact that all home water ionizers need minerals in order to run effectively. A lot of people with water ionizers do not know what minerals are important for effective electrolysis or ways to produce more molecular hydrogen than a water ionizer was originally intended. You can only figure this out if you have a home set up that allows you to experiment with different ways of producing very high-quality clean water with different flow rates and filters that give enough contact time to the water to actually remove 99.99% of particulates. Then you also need very accurate meters down to at least two decimal points to measure each stage of the water production process as your tweak for experimentation and new ideas.
